Hide-A-Way Hill
Housing Connecticut Clinic | Fall 2024
In collaboration with Lauren Sexton, Kristen, Perng, Elise Celestin, Evan Gaj, + Alex Jackson
Hide-a-Way Hill is a small community of 20 affordable rental units in Moodus, Connecticut. Working with a non-profit organization focused on developing affordable housing on the Connecticut shoreline, this project aims to address the area’s housing crisis by creating a new model for the more complex, forested sites that exist throughout the Lower Connecticut River Valley. The proposal prioritizes sustainability, balances privacy with a sense of community, and offers residents a place to live within the natural beauty of the site.
To address the difficulties of the steep, forested site, the project proposes prefabricated passive house assemblies that offer energy-efficient and flexible modules for deploy-ability on future sites. Taking inspiration from Moodus’ historic camp grounds, clusters of 4 units are arranged along the topography of the site and connected with shared courtyards and walking paths. The unit clusters are oriented towards the slope of the site, offering private views of nature while maintaining a sense of community amongst the residents.
