Academic Architecture Studio | Fall 2024
In collaboration with Marya Bakhrameeva
Located in Quillagua City, Chile, in the midst of the Atacama Desert, this project is a art in residence center, for three artists and 1 host. There are 9 courtyards, 7 public and 2 private, that have in between corridor spaces can be used as gallery walls for public exhibitions. Each courtyard preserves the natural topography of the landscape, with its area gradually shrinking in the diagonal direction as a response to the movement towards the water. As the topography lowers towards the water, the distance between ground and nature grows, making the difference be as little of a step in one area, or a seat in another.
Positioned diagonally on the corners are the private living spaces for the artists and the host. Communal working spaces, kitchen, and living are pushed to the outside of the frame, in contrast to the private living areas. Openings in the walls allow for fluid movement between the courtyards and the in between space, and work with diagonality to allow for one to look from one end of the building to another.
